Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Cosmo is dealing with the lawyer recommended by Charles.

Dear Dr Bello,

I have been directed to you by a good friend and colleague of mine, Charles Nujomo. (Ha!)

I am not sure if he has briefed you on my predicament but, in essence, it is that I have a claim to reimbursement from the Nigerian Government for work my company performed on behalf of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company.

The Government is willing to settle this account but requires my presence at settlement. Meeting such a requirement is quite difficult at present so we are exploring the alternative open to us, the use of a local lawyer to consummate the transaction on my behalf.

Adding to this difficulty is the 'time factor' - I understand that there is only a very small window of opportunity to close the deal now. Presumably failure to meet this window will result in the payment being delayed to another appropriation period. Possibly even cancelled. This would be catastrophic as we would obviously be comprehensively out of pocket.

Are you able to help me?

What do you recommend that I do?

Yours sincerely,

J. Cosmo Newbery.

P.S. I do not know if Mr Nujomo told you but I am quite deaf due to an industrial accident earlier this year. The claim for compensation is before the WorkCover court at the moment. This adds to our difficulties as the use of the telephone is impossible.

A reply comes back from Dr Bello:

Attention: J. Cosmo Newbery.

Dear Sir,

Re: Legal Representation.

We refer to your email dated the 27th May, 2002 captioned "Seeking your assistance".

Our chambers is able to grant you the needed assistance you require by representing you at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

To represent you however, we will require further details regarding your claims to enble us carry out a verification excercise to determine the position of your payment.

We will therefore require the followings:
(1). The beneficiary/company name and address.
(2). Your contract number.
(3). Your contract sum.
(4). A letter of introduction from you or your company. This must be on your company letter head.

Finally, we wish to inform you of the need for us to have your detailed c.v since we do not have you in our yearly retainership. (This could be interesting. I am not sure where this is heading.)

Thanks for your patronage.

Yours faithfully,

Dr. Paul Bello (SAN)
Principal Partner.
