|6th January, 2005||Why would I want to subscribe to Time magazine?||-|
Dear Mr Trumper,
Thank you for the offer of a reduced rate subscription to Time Magazine.
I used to respect Time Magazine greatly. I no longer do.
I admired it's editorial independence. I no longer do.
I recognised it's journalistic integrity. I no longer do.
In 1938 Time Magazine chose Adolf Hilter as its Man of the Year. The public were outraged but the magazine pointed out that, as unpleasant as he was, Hitler was the man who most influenced world events in 1938 and held its ground. It was a brave and correct call.
The day Time Magazine folded at the knees and made Rudi Guiliani Man of the Year it showed itself to me be a coward to public opinion and in my mind put all future editorial and journalistic decisions under a very dark cloud.
How can I trust Time Magazine to report the news fairly and accurately when I see it distort current history for dubious political, or worse financial, reasons?
I will pay for fearless journalism and quality reporting. I will not pay for editorial opportunism and journalistic indifference.
So, thank you for the offer of a reduced rate subscription to Time Magazine.
But no thank you.
J Cosmo Newbery.
